March 19, 2022
Fort Payne, AL
Celebrate the Spring Equinox in a real cave!
This rare opportunity offers a small group of women the chance to embrace the myth of Persephone and Demeter while experiencing an actual underworld journey ourselves.
We will tell the story of Persephone, learn about the Spring Rites of ancient Greece, and share in a few simple rituals inspired by their traditions. You will get exclusive access to a private cave, journey to a breathtaking underground ritual room for our women’s circle and have the unforgettable experience of drumming in a cave. This is how we call Spring back to the land "the cavewoman way"!

FAQs and More Information
Where will this event take place?
All activities will take place in one location in Fort Payne, AL at the site of a private cave and small gathering facility. There will be restrooms, free parking, and indoor space in case of rain. The cave and property are not open to the public, therefore we are not publishing the address on this page. You will receive the address and directions once you have registered. The property is within 5 miles of downtown Fort Payne, AL.
Can children attend?
This is a women's event. Girls ages 8 and up, who have attended a Cavewoman Way gathering or Red Tent circle, are welcome with approval of the host. There will be no youth activities or childcare and any girls who do attend will be expected to be with adults at all times.
Who/what is Persephone?
The legend of Persephone and her mother, Demeter, are the inspiration for this gathering. We will tell their stories as part of our celebration, so no knowledge is needed to join us. However, if you would like to read about them in advance, this is a good place to start: Persephone - World History Encyclopedia
Do I need a drum or drumming experience?
If you have a frame drum or buffalo drum, please bring it. There will be a limited number of drums available if you don't have one. If you would like to borrow one, please reserve one during registration. If we run out of extras, extra percussion instruments and handmade drums will also be available on site. If you would like to purchase a drum in advance, feel free to message us for recommendations. We will be playing very simple beats on our drums and no experience is needed.
What will the cave walk be like in terms of distance and terrain?
We will walk 0.5 miles to the cave's ritual room for a roundtrip distance of 1 mile. The terrain is packed dirt that can become slightly muddy depending on the moisture level so hiking shoes are recommended. The terrain ascends and descends throughout the walk. While the walk is not strenuous, there are many steps, and the walk may not be safe for those with mobility issues or back/knee/ankle concerns. All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver before attending.
What will we be doing in the cave?
After walking through the cave, we will spend time sitting underground and experiencing the true darkness of the underworld for several minutes. There will be readings and a sharing circle, plus drumming.
How long will we be in the cave?
Approximately 2 hours.
Are there restrooms in the cave?
No. We will take multiple restroom breaks before going into the cave for this reason. Once we are inside, all participants are expected to remain with the group until we exit together.
What do I need to bring?
We will not be bringing anything into the cave except our drum, lights, and ritual supplies. However, you may want to bring the following for your time before/after our cave journey: journal, outdoor blanket or chair, a change of shoes, a jacket or coat (depending on outdoor temperature),
What should I wear?
This is very important: bring layers! It will be 58 degrees in the cave; however, the temperature outside may be much colder, or even warmer. Watch the weather forecast to prepare and bring an extra pair of shoes. The entrance to the cave requires stepping up and over a metal bar a couple feet off the ground. We do NOT recommend dresses or clothing that cannot get dirty.
Are overnight accommodations available?
While we do not offer overnight lodging or camping as part of this experience, there are several hotels and Airbnb options in Fort Payne, AL. We recommend checking the refund policies of any accommodations you consider. We are not responsible for lodging-related monies lost in the event of cancellation, postponement, or your unexpected inability to attend.
What will parking be like?
Parking is free. The parking lot is a mix of gravel and grass.
Can you accommodate special diets or food requests?
The Greek Feast menu will be varied enough to accommodate vegan, vegetarian and gluten free diets. However, the dessert will NOT be vegan or gluten-free.
What is the refund policy?
This event has a no-refund and no-credit policy, with the exception of the event itself being cancelled. If the event is cancelled, you will receive a full refund. If you cannot attend, you may transfer your registration to another woman at no extra cost.
What are the health and safety protocols?
Health and safety protocols will be based on Alabama state-level recommendations at the time of the event. Expect that masks to be recommended while indoors. We reserve the right to require masks indoors, based on Alabama and CDC requirements at time.
